Rosewood Hotel Georgia
Following a dedicated restoration, this Vancouver landmark hotel returns as the hot spot it was when it debuted in 1927.
The Rosewood Hotel Georgia is a star reborn. When its opened in 1927, was the place to stay in Downtown Vancouver, BC, for legends of film and music, and it also welcomed British Royalty. After being closed for renovation, the hotel reopened in 2011 and all are welcome — with or without the red carpet.
The original Hotel Georgia was designed by architects Robert T. Garrow and John Graham, Sr. in the “Georgian Revival” style, which places heavy emphasis on proportion, scale and symmetry. The restoration and regeneration of the hotel interiors were performed by Toronto-based designer Munge Leung. The use of gilding is minimized to emphasize the complement the deep mahogany wood paneling in the lobby and lounge areas. Many original features from the hotel’s early days can still be seen, including the clock in the lobby, the ornate metalwork at the elevators, and the highly ornamental stair railings.
The Hotel Georgia offers 156 rooms, about half its original capacity of 320 rooms. This permitted greater flexibility in room sizes and allowed for additional amenities including a spa (Sense, a Rosewood Spa), and expanded dining and meeting rooms. The hotel is proud to exhibit one of the largest Canadian art collections in the country.
Fine dining at Hotel Georgia is offered in the award-winning Hawksworth Restaurant. Local Chef David Hawksworth’s menus are classically inspired, and he takes presentation to a new level. Special dinners can be held in the restaurant’s private dining room. The Bel Cafe, also under the hat of Hawksworth, offers light fare, great desserts and a range of coffees in a light and hip setting. Outdoor dining is provided at Reflections, offering casual meals and cocktails in the hotel’s interior courtyard.
The premier event space at Hotel Georgia is the Spanish Ballroom. This is a truly unique space and is perfect for social celebrations and equally suited for meetings. The ballroom features beautifully carved cornices and ornamentation at upper walls and doorways, crystal chandeliers, and the original minstrel’s gallery.
The Hotel Georgia has earned a long list of awards in its short time since reopening. A few of the high honors include: Best Luxury Historical Hotel in the World (World Luxury Hotel Awards); AAA Four Diamond, and Restaurant of the Year (Vancouver Magazine).
