A beautifully restored landmark of Edwardian and Art Deco design with more than a touch of modern architecure becomes a vibrant luxury hotel in London’s East End.

In 2011, the Town Hall Hotel & Apartments opened to acclaim as a rare pairing of both historic and modern architecture and design. It is a unique place to stay in East London, and we say congratulations to all involved with earning its many design awards.

The original town hall opened in 1910 in London’s Patriot Square. The architecture showed off the wealth of Edwardian society, and government spared no expense in demonstrating its power. The building’s exterior details reveal great artistry, especially at the entrance, window heads, and in the interior lobbies and council chamber.

About twenty years later an addition was commissioned and executed in the new Art Deco style. At the same time upgrades were made to the building’s interiors. Finishes included walnut and mahogany paneling, marble flooring and stairs, and ornamental metalwork. The Council Chamber, ideally suited for lectures and seminars today, was also built during the Art Deco period.

The UK-based architectural firm, RARE Architecture, founded by Nathalie Rozencwajg and Michel Da Costa Goncalves, led a team of architects and designers to restore the landmark building. In addition, a major design objective was to refresh portions of the old building and make a striking visual statement. This was accomplished with a laser-cut metal screen that acts as a sheath around portions of the old building. From a distance it appears as a shadowy reflection of its Edwardian counterpart. The juxtaposition is almost surrealistic. Up close, it is a decorative metal screen with punched holes, allowing light into the guest rooms.

The hotel’s historic lobby and public spaces are bright and shiny, featuring classic modern furnishings that are a perfect fit to the Art Deco interiors.

There are 98 generously-sized guest rooms and apartments, the apartments ranging from studio to 3 bedroom. The supersized De Montfort Suite has stained glass windows, great height, and a vaulted ceiling. This suite is ideal for small group receptions and informal meetings.

The hotel’s Viajante Restaurant is the singular sensation of Portugese Chef Nuno Mendes. Mendes has trained around the world, and his internationally-inspired menus have earned Viajante one Michelin Star. The adjoining Viajante Bar offers a huge collection of whiskies and gin served up in vintage glasses. Cocktails are also offered by the roving Town Hall Tea Lady who will prepare and deliver your special drink at your room.

A contemporary fitness center includes a delightful glass-enclosed swimming pool with a skylight spanning its full length.
