Multiple talented designers masterfully transform a former grand Victorian hotel in central London and return it to a new generation of luxury traveler
Originally built in 1883, the former Metropole Hotel catered to royalty, stars of the day, and visiting dignitaries. It was a designed as a luxury hotel and was “dressed for success”, exhibiting a wealth of architectural detailing both on the exterior and throughout the interior public spaces. The building was occupied by the Ministry of Defense during both World Wars and was abandoned in the latter 20th century. Fortunately, this Victorian gem was rescued. converted back to hotel status, and now shines as the Corinthia Hotel London, the flagship of the Corinthia luxury brand.
A remarkable program of restoration and improvements was undertaken by a team of seriously talented designers — Seifert International Architecture; GA Design International, and David Collins Studio. The result is one distinctive and invigorating space after another and an exciting new perspective on luxury accommodations in the 21st century.
The Corinthia features 294 well appointed rooms and suites. The rooms are consistently luxurious across all categories and exhibit a refreshing and approachable contemporary style. There are 7 penthouse suites, most of which were recognized by the prestigious European Hotel Design Awards in the Best Penthouse Category. The Penthouses are each unique in their design and capitalize on the characteristics of the building’s architecture at the top floors.
The centerpiece of the hotel is the Lobby Lounge. This is a stunning and irresistible space, dominated by a globe-shaped Baccarat crystal chandelier and full height windows facing a private courtyard. This is the place to spend some time…
The Bassoon Bar exudes an atmosphere of an exclusive club, where everyone is a member. It is a relaxing, intimate space, offering custom-mixed cocktails from a true “piano bar.” The Bassoon Bar features live music on most evenings and showcases the artwork of 20th century African-American painter William Johnson.
Massimo Restaurant and Oyster Bar offer modern Italian cuisine in rich, lively surroundings. This is a spectacular space, integrating original architectural elements with contemporary and most complementary interior furnishings. The atmosphere is charismatic and Italy is in the details, from the interiors to the menu.
The Northall Restaurant has the best seat in the house, highlighted by the soft curve of the exterior wall, dramatic interior height, and the tall arched windows that define this grand space. The Northall features British cuisine in a sophisticated London setting and offers dining throughout the day. A visual highlight of the restaurant is the eye-catching Northall Bar. It is the center of action and a great place to see and be seen.
The award-winning ESPA flagship spa, Espa Life at Corinthia, is like no other we have seen. The spa is substantial in size, yet offers a great sense of privacy across its multi-level facility. The interiors are ultra-modern and uber-luxurious, designed to generate a different “experience” on each floor level.
