A famous Swiss wellness retreat is transformed into a contemporary luxury hotel and receives multiple awards for its design, cuisine, and unforgetable spa

Since its opening in 1899, the “Dolder Grand Hotel & Curhaus” soon become the destination for relaxation and rejuvenation in Zurich. The original hotel building was designed in 1897 by Basel architect Jaques Gros, and it is now a National Landmark. The Dolder Grand grew progressively more popular over the years and by 1928 was a year-round resort. Steady growth and prosperity across Europe in the decades following World War II resulted in an increase in leisure travel. The Dolder Grand became a luxury destination catering to Royalty, political dignitaries, and Hollywood celebrities. Major additions, mostly metal and glass low-rise buildings, were made to the hotel in 1964 and 1970. Not all of the hotel’s expansion was attractive.

In 2001 new investors took over the Dolder Grand and commenced a major undertaking of “out with the bad, in with the good.”  They started by hiring the internationally-acclaimed architectural firm of Foster + Partners to direct the project. Their assignment included renovation of the original landmark building and replacement of the ill-advised, mid-century additions with new contemporary wings. The hotel closed from 2004 to 2008, a short time frame given the scope of work.

Today, the Dolder Grand has been total transformed. There are two new, subtly-shaped, modern building wings, each loosely resembling a droplet of water. These wings are independent of the original hotel and appear to “hug” the historic building at both ends. Generations of resort lovers will find warmth in the new buildings’ soft shape and coolness in their materials and finishes. It is noteworthy that the project incorporates an energy-saving, geothermal heating system, which the hotel boasts reduces its energy consumption by up to 50%.

With the historic elements of the hotel restored, the new wings completed, and all public spaces and rooms upgraded, a new generation of the Dolder Grand has been born. Upon entering the hotel’s lobby, the impression given is one of contemporary and classic Swiss design. A team of interior designers, United Designers, FSI Design, and Sylvia Planning,  contributed a variety of contemporary atmospheres throughout the public areas. There are now 173 rooms and 11 very unique suites. The Grand Maestro Suite is truly spectacular.

The hotel’s fine dining is created by German-born Chef Heiku Nieder, who has been with the hotel since it reopened.  His culinary talent has earned the “The Restaurant” 2 Michelin Stars.

In keeping with Dolder’ Grand’s legacy of wellness and relaxation, extensive focus and attention was paid to the design of the new spa. At 4,000 square meters (43,000 square feet), this award-winning spa is huge. A main feature of the spa is the breathtaking Aqua Zone, dominated by a curvalineal swimming pool. The pool is flanked by stone walls and floor-to-ceiling windows. There are separate mens’ and womens’ spas, a medical wellness center, salon, cafe, and retail shop.
